Turnkey Metal Buildings for Illinois, Missouri and the Midwest

A metal building should fit the way you’ll use it: a shop for your business, a warehouse that can grow, a hangar for your plane, a gym for your team, or a place to keep the tractor and trailers. O’Neil Metal Buildings & Barndominiums designs and builds metal buildings for homeowners, farms, churches and businesses across Illinois, Missouri and the Midwest.

We build two ways: wood post-frame with steel roof and walls, or turnkey pre-engineered steel (PEMB). We can take the whole job, from permits and concrete through the finished building, or supply a shell material package for your own crew. We work out of Belleville, IL, in the Metro East, minutes from St. Louis, and build throughout Illinois and Missouri, from the St. Louis area to Northern Illinois and Chicagoland, and across the Midwest.

Metal Buildings Near You, From One Builder

If you’ve been searching for metal buildings near me or steel buildings near me, a lot of what comes up is kits shipped from somewhere else. You still have to find someone to pour the concrete, pull the permit, put it up and wire it. O’Neil is a builder. We design the building for your site and manage the whole build under one contract.

  • One point of contact from the first call through the final walk-through.
  • Designed for your site: layout, door placement, access and how you’ll actually use the space.
  • Trades handled for you: plumbing, HVAC and electrical are done by O’Neil-trained subcontractors that we schedule and manage, so you don’t have to.
  • Built across Illinois, Missouri and the Midwest from our home base in Belleville, IL.

Two Ways We Build Metal Buildings: Post-Frame and Pre-Engineered Steel

Every project starts with picking the right structure. We build both systems and recommend the one that fits your use, your site and your budget.

Post-frame metal building Pre-engineered metal building (PEMB)
Frame Laminated wood columns and engineered trusses, with a steel roof and walls Welded steel rigid frames with steel girts and purlins, and metal roof and wall panels
Good fit for Shops, garages, equipment storage, farm and equestrian buildings, many commercial buildings Warehouses, manufacturing plants, airplane hangars, athletic facilities, churches, offices, retail stores, RV and boat canopies, workshops and other commercial projects
How it’s made Framed on site to the O’Neil framing standard (below) Custom fabricated for your project, with frames and panels cut to your design, then built turnkey by O’Neil

The O’Neil post-frame standard. Many pole barns are built by burying wood posts in the ground. O’Neil columns never touch dirt: – Laminated 3-ply and 4-ply columns, 8′ on center – Columns anchored to concrete with heavy steel brackets – Girts and purlins 2′ on center, with every purlin set in a bracket – Engineered trusses, always bolted to the columns – 26-gauge steel with lifetime paint

Turnkey pre-engineered steel buildings. A pre-engineered metal building uses welded rigid frames with metal roofing and siding, engineered and custom fabricated for your project. With O’Neil, a PEMB doesn’t arrive as a pile of steel for you to figure out. We design it around your site and use, handle the permit, pour the foundation and slab, erect the steel, and finish the building, with the trades and interior build-out included when you want them. Panel choices include standing seam, mechanically seamed, hidden fastener and exposed fastener systems.

Bolt-up steel buildings. For smaller steel buildings, our bolt-up metal buildings come in 8 standard sizes and go together with no on-site welding.

Specialty Steel Buildings: Hangars, Athletic Facilities, Churches and RV Canopies

Airplane Hangars

Our metal airplane hangars use large clear spans to give aircraft and equipment secure, weatherproof storage with no columns in the way. We lay out each hangar for private or commercial aviation and fit it with the door system you need: hydraulic, bifold or sliding.

Indoor Athletic Facilities

From training centers to competition space, a steel athletic building gives you open, unobstructed room for courts, turf fields or fitness equipment. We design and build clear-span sports buildings for schools, sports complexes and private training centers, with insulation and layouts that fit how the space will be used.

Churches

A metal church building gives a congregation a durable, open sanctuary with room to grow. We build churches on pre-engineered steel or post-frame and can take the project from permits through interior build-out, including offices and gathering space, with plumbing, HVAC and electrical handled by O’Neil-trained subcontractors.

RV and Boat Canopies

Need to keep an RV, camper or boat out of the sun and weather? Our metal RV canopies and boat storage canopies give you covered parking for one rig or a full row, built on a pre-engineered steel frame and sized for your vehicles and site.

Turnkey Metal Buildings: Permits to Finished Space

Most of our customers want one company to handle the whole thing. With a turnkey O’Neil metal building, post-frame or pre-engineered steel, we take care of:

  • Design and permitting for your county or town
  • Concrete: footings and slab, sized for your building and how you’ll use it
  • The shell: framing or steel erection, steel roof and walls, trim, doors, windows and gutters
  • Plumbing, HVAC and electrical, when your building needs them, done by O’Neil-trained subcontractors. We schedule and manage them, so you still deal with one point of contact.
  • Interior build-out, from offices and break rooms to finished living space

You don’t have to act as your own general contractor, track down subs, or line up the concrete crew and erection crew yourself. See how our process works.

Shell Material Packages for Your Own Crew

Have your own crew, or doing it yourself? We can supply a shell material package designed for your building:

  • Posts/columns
  • Trusses and framing
  • Steel roof and wall panels
  • Trim
  • Doors
  • Windows
  • Gutters

Concrete and labor aren’t included in a shell package. Ask about one when you request your quote, or see our steel & lumber supply page.

Metal Building Contractor or Metal Building Kit?

Lots of people start by shopping metal building kits. A kit gets you the parts. Everything else is still on you: the permit, the concrete, the erection crew, the doors, and the electrical and plumbing.

Metal Buildings FAQs

Do you build metal buildings near me?

If you’re in Illinois, Missouri or elsewhere in the Midwest, yes. We’re based in Belleville, IL, in the Metro East, and build metal buildings throughout St. Louis, both states, including Northern Illinois and Chicagoland, and across the Midwest.

What’s the difference between a post-frame metal building and a pre-engineered steel building?

A post-frame metal building uses laminated wood columns and engineered trusses with a steel roof and walls. A pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) uses welded steel rigid frames and is custom fabricated for your project. We build both turnkey and will recommend the one that fits your use and your site.

Do you build pre-engineered metal buildings turnkey?

Yes. We design the PEMB for your site, handle the permit and concrete, erect the steel and finish the building, with plumbing, HVAC and electrical by O’Neil-trained subcontractors when you need them.

Do you sell metal building kits?

We’re a builder first, so most customers choose a turnkey build. We also offer shell material packages (posts/columns, trusses and framing, steel, trim, doors, windows and gutters) for customers with their own crew, plus bolt-up steel buildings. Concrete and labor aren’t included in a shell package.

Do you handle permits, concrete and the trades?

Yes, on turnkey projects. We handle permitting, concrete and the shell. Plumbing, HVAC and electrical are done by O’Neil-trained subcontractors that we manage, so you have one point of contact.

What kinds of metal buildings do you build?

Warehouses, manufacturing buildings, shops, automotive service centers, airplane hangars, self-storage, indoor athletic facilities, offices, retail stores, churches, RV and boat canopies, equipment storage, farm and equestrian buildings, garages and barndominiums.

Can I finish the inside of a metal building?

Yes. We pour concrete floors and do interior build-outs, from offices to finished living space.

How much does a metal building cost?

It depends on the size, post-frame or steel, your site and concrete, doors and openings, insulation, and which trades are included. Request a free quote for a number on your building and your site.

Do you offer financing?

Yes, financing options are available. See our financing page for details.

What colors are available?

A wide range of colors and paint finishes, from siliconized polyester to Kynar. Our steel comes with lifetime paint.
