A new church building is a big step for any congregation. It should welcome people, fit your ministry, and be wise stewardship of what your members have given. O’Neil Metal Buildings & Barndominiums designs and builds metal church buildings for congregations across Illinois, Missouri, and the St. Louis region. We are based in Belleville, IL, serve a roughly 200-mile area, and have been building for 50 years.
What We Build for Churches
- Sanctuaries with open, column-free worship space
- Fellowship halls for meals, events, and community gatherings
- Classroom and education wings for children, youth, and adult ministry
- Family life centers and gyms for recreation and outreach
- Offices, storage, and maintenance buildings
- Additions to an existing church campus
One Team From Planning to Opening Day
Building committees have enough on their plates. With O’Neil’s turnkey design-build service, one team:
- Designs the building around your ministry, seating, and site
- Provides engineering and stamped drawings as required
- Handles all permitting
- Builds it, including concrete, framing, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work when needed
That means one point of contact for your committee and fewer surprises along the way. Learn more about our process.
Why Congregations Choose Metal Church Buildings
Metal and post frame buildings give churches open interiors, flexible layouts, and an exterior that is easy to care for. Benefits include:
- Open, clear-span space for worship without posts blocking sight lines
- Flexible floor plans that can change as your ministry grows
- Room to expand later with an addition or new wing
- Low-maintenance exteriors with a lifetime paint warranty on our metal panels
- A traditional look when you want it, with porches, entry canopies, steeples, wainscot, and accent colors
Our pre-engineered metal buildings are a strong fit for larger sanctuaries and gyms, and post frame works well for many fellowship halls and smaller buildings. See more on our metal buildings page.
Planning Your Church Building
Every congregation is different. In early planning, we talk through:
- Seating and growth: how many people you serve today and in five or ten years
- How the space is used during the week, not just on Sunday
- Sanctuary height and acoustics for music and speaking
- Classrooms, nursery, restrooms, kitchen, and offices
- Entries and gathering space so people have room to connect
- Parking, access, and site layout
- Phasing, so you can build what you can fund now and add later
Church buildings are assembly spaces, and local code and zoning requirements apply. Because O’Neil handles permitting, we work through those requirements with your committee.
Church Projects by O’Neil
O’Neil Metal Buildings & Barndominiums built for the Shiloh Church of Three Springs in Shiloh, IL, and we bring the same design, permitting, and construction approach to every congregation we serve. Ask us about it when you call.
Finishes That Feel Like Home
A metal church does not have to look like a warehouse. Exterior options include siding and trim colors from our materials and finishes, wainscot, covered entries and porches, and roofing choices. See our siding and roofing options as well.
Material Kits for Volunteer Builds
Some congregations build with volunteers or a member contractor. O’Neil sells material kits with framing lumber, columns, trusses, metal, and windows and doors, with insulation and interior stud framing as options. Each kit comes with detailed construction drawings. These are construction drawings, not structural or engineered drawings. Because church buildings often need engineering for permit, most congregations will want our turnkey service or will need to arrange engineering separately. Serving Churches Across the Region
We serve congregations in St. Louis, the Metro East, Southern and Central Illinois, and Eastern Missouri. See our commercial buildings, metal buildings in Illinois, metal buildings in Missouri, and financing pages.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a metal building look like a traditional church?
Yes. Porches, covered entries, steeples, wainscot, accent colors, and roofing choices can give a metal church a traditional, welcoming look.
What church buildings do you build?
O’Neil builds sanctuaries, fellowship halls, classroom wings, family life centers and gyms, offices, storage buildings, and additions.
Do you handle engineering and permits for churches?
Yes. Our turnkey service includes design, engineering and stamped drawings as required, all permitting, and construction, including MEP when needed.
Can we build in phases?
Yes. We can plan your site and building so you build what you can fund now and add space later.
Can our volunteers build from a kit?
